An expression of my appreciation for those who have served and remain with us and those who we no longer have the opportunity to express our appreciation for because of their sacrifice.
On this weekend of each year there is a flag lit throughout the night as a reminder to those who may come this way that it is not a piece of cloth that provides for us our freedom, it is those, some who still lay buried on foreign soil, some who remain unknown and some who are laid to rest in fields of honor.
Recently I was meeting with a service member who is transitioning to civilian life and some of his duties as a Marine was to provide Funeral Honors. Not sure if anyone has ever witnessed this at a graveside of a veteran, but when an impeccably dressed in uniform service member kneels before a spouse and family and says, “On behalf of the President Of The United States, and states their branch of service, and a grateful Nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service.”, there is a reverence in that sacred moment.
